Today’s tip deals with Off-Duty Officer Safety.
Back in February, a police officer in Boston noticed that someone had loosened the lug nuts on his personal vehicle. He only discovered this after one of the wheels nearly came off on his drive to work. It appeared that the lug nuts were loosened at his home and appeared to be intentional.
This was not the first time. In fact, a warning was issued to police officers in the Boston area in 2016 after a similar incident. In that incident, though, the wheel came completely off. So far, it has been reported that the personal vehicles of at least four officers in the area have been targeted.
The threats facing law enforcement officers seem to be increasing. Many police agencies across the country have issued warnings about specific threats.
What can we do to protect ourselves and our families? Spread the word among fellow officers. Consider sharing some of this information with your families. These incidents are real. The risks are clear. Avoid complacency. Do not disregard threats or warnings at work or when you are off-duty.
Keep an eye out for any signs that your home or car have been tampered with.
And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham, signing off.
