Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for all my friends in corrections. I’d like to share some information on the security threats facing correctional facilities today.
With advances in technology and changing social dynamics, criminal activity is constantly evolving. As correctional staff, it’s important to be aware of security threat trends and how they may affect your facility. So, what are these security threats? I’m getting there.
Let’s talk tech first. Today, cybercrime is prevalent worldwide. Cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities in online systems and networks to engage in hacking, identity theft, fraud, and spreading malware. Correctional facilities are not immune to these computer and network breaches. Cybercriminals can hack into your agency’s records management system to access and steal confidential information. They can even shut it down completely with ransomware.
Develop a comprehensive security management plan that emphasizes technology, intelligence gathering, and staff training.
We also have to consider multinational organized crime syndicates. These groups commit crimes like drug and human trafficking, money laundering, and smuggling across borders. Guess what? These groups often continue running their criminal enterprises from within correctional facilities. Yeah, that’s a problem.
The last security threat I’ll mention is political violence. We’ve seen several recent incidents of political violence in our country. When arrested, these offenders may be admitted to your facility. Know what makes them tick and be prepared to manage the unique risks they bring.
Because of the globalization and diversification of security threats, correctional facilities must be ready to adapt – now more than ever. This requires strategic planning. Develop a comprehensive security management plan that emphasizes technology, intelligence gathering, and staff training. These measures can enhance the safety and security of your facility.
And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
